Q: So let’s say I join this thing, then what?
A: You will be part of the decision making body of your respective project. Also you can get involved with the management of Beyond Borders itself if and when there is a need in the Steering Committee. You can get involved in other projects we do and also submit project ideas and proposals which we can help refine and then submit for funding.
Q: What is the Steering Committee?
A: It is the decision making body of Beyond Borders consisting of volunteer youth. Members of the Steering Committee are also involved in various projects, but they commit some extra time and effort to manage and direct Beyond Borders at an organizational level.
Q: What if I’m not in the age group?
A: You can still volunteer for any of the projects.
Q: How much of a time-commitment does it take?
A: Depends on status of the project you are in. Typically it will require roughly about a 2-3 hour commitment per week.
Q: I am a student/working will that be a problem?
A: No, most of the current people involved in Beyond Borders are either students and/or working themselves.
Q: How did we start?
A : Beyond Borders was a project envisioned, initiated and funded by British Councils in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, UK and Sri Lanka from 2005 till April 2007. But as of now Beyond Borders Sri Lanka is an independent not-for-profit youth organization. We are continued to be supported by the British Council as well as other donors and partner organizations we have teamed up with since registering under the Companies Act.
Q: Who funds Beyond Borders?
We are funded by various donors for various projects. Currently our donors include the US Department of State, OXFAM and FLICT. We are also partnering with the Rotaract movement, Warehouse Project, Young Researchers Collective and Reach Out on various projects
Q: If I am outside Colombo?
A: Right now, BB Sri Lanka is based in Colombo. Therefore meetings will be held in and around the city. However, please feel free to apply if you are outside the capital as we are considering widening our scope.
Q: So, this is an international thing?
A: Yes. We have Core Groups in New Delhi, Mumbai (India) and Dhaka (Bangladesh) working along the same themes but within their own local context. Groups in Pakistan are no more active.
Q: Cool, we will meet this people?
A: Why not?

Q: Will I get paid?
A: No. Its voluntary, remember?
Q: Where is your office?
A: Mostly we operate in a virtual office environment; we meet somewhere when we want to. When we need an office we simply rent the space.
Q: How often do you meet?
A: The Steering Committee meets at least couple of times per month. The individual projects and management groups have their own meetings as and when needed. Which is often, like at least once every two weeks.
